Principal Smith's Weekly News

Principal Smith's Weekly News

Dear Liberty Families,

We had a wonderful four-day week of learning! Students shared so many fun stories about building snowmen, having snowball fights, creating snow tunnels, making snow cones, and sledding on our snow day. I’m so glad they are making such special memories with family and friends!

Our students also returned from Thanksgiving break ready to learn. This week, we began our MAP and DIBELS assessments.

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is a computer-based assessment that helps us understand each child’s current learning level in reading and math. This gives us detailed information that helps guide instruction and track growth over time.

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a set of short  assessments that measure early reading skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency. These help us identify where students are excelling and where they may need extra support.

Next week, we will continue these assessments and complete make-ups for students who may have been absent.

A note about Attendance:

December may fly by quickly, but each day of attendance makes a difference. This is a short month, with a big impact. Not only are there academics to focus on as we come to a close on the first semester, with things like final exams and projects, but there are also several events planned at school which help to build our students' social skills and make school all the more enjoyable.

DID YOU KNOW? The state average for chronic absenteeism for students (missing 10% or more of instructional time for any reason-excused or unexcused) is just over 25%. Lakota's chronic absenteeism average for the school year is right about 12%.

Thank you for helping your child build positive habits—showing up, staying engaged, and ending the semester on a high note! We appreciate our families for supporting learning every day.

Important Dates:

  • December 22nd-January 5th NO SCHOOL

Thank you for your continued support, and have a fantastic weekend!
