English as a Second Language

Lakota's English as a Second Language program serves over 1,900 English Learner students in grades K-12 who represent more than 40 different languages.

The purpose of Lakota's English as a Second Language (ESL) program is to provide tiers of support to all English Learner (EL) students, through best instructional practices, research-based interventions and collaborative problem-solving with parents, administrators and teachers.

We have three goals to help ensure that our students receive the best possible ESL service at Lakota:

  1. Implement systems to monitor and evaluate compliance with Title III requirements;
  2. Provide tiers of support to all EL students; and
  3. Provide opportunities to engage families of EL students.

Home Help Tips for Parents of English Learner Students

  • Read to your child daily in your native language or in English.
  • Encourage your child to maintain his/her native language while learning English. Research shows that children who have fluent skills in their native language learn the second language more quickly.
  • Practice vocabulary with your child using household objects.
  • Practice good study habits.
  • Set aside a time for students to study on a regular basis.
  • Meet with your child’s ESL teacher and classroom teacher.
